Message Index

When you log in to Webmail, you are automatically taken to your Inbox in the right frame, or Message Index. You can also select a folder in your Folder List, and you will be taken (in the right frame) to the Message Index for that folder.

The Current Folder displays which of the folders listed in the left frame you are currently in.

Sign out will safely log you out of the program when you are finished.

Under the top bar is the Menu Bar, which is composed of the following items which will be covered in detail later in the tutorial:

  • Compose - Make and send an e-mail which may include attachments.
  • Addresses - Holds a list of addresses that are contained in your personal address book.
  • Folders - All folder manipulation takes place under this. You can delete, create, rename, subscribe, and unsubscribe folders.
  • Calendar - You can use this tool to schedule appointments and keep up with important events.
  • Tools - Under this menu option, you can access our Spam Filtering and Forwarding tools.
  • Options - Change settings of how Webmail responds and looks.
  • Search - With this tool, you can search through a mailbox for given criteria.
  • Help - You are already here!
  • Contact Us - With this too, you can submit questions and report problems to our Technical Support.

An informative Webmail Tip will appear at the top of your Inbox message index when you first login.

If your mailbox contains many messages, the list will by default be split into multiple pages and the first page will be displayed. To view other pages, use the Previous and Next links at the top and bottom of the message list. You can also jump to a specific page directly by selecting one of the Page Numbers (each represents a page). If you select Show All you will disable the so-called paginating and all messages will be displayed on one big page. This tool is also available at the bottom of the Message Index.

You can use the Select/Unselect All tool to select all the Check Boxes next to the messages in the current index view. This tool is also available at the bottom of the Message Index.

The Viewing Messages line informs you which e-mail you are viewing numerically and how many total you have. This tool is also available at the bottom of the Message Index.

On the left side is a drop down list box and the Move button. This box lists your currently subscribed folders. Any selected message will be moved to the selected folder when the move button is pushed. Multiple messages may be moved at once by selecting the appropriate Check Boxes.

Selecting the Forward button will append all selected messages to a new Compose message window.

Selecting the Delete button will send all selected messages to your Trash folder.

Selecting the Archive button will compress all selected messages into one file which you can download for offline archival. We will discuss different Archive options later in the tutorial.

You can Flag or Unflag Messages to indicate high importance. In addition, Read and Unread buttons mark all selected messages as already read or not yet read (bold). These tools also work in conjunction with the Message Icons.

You can choose to Group by Sender and Subject to organize your messages by sender and subject to help you organize or find a desired message.

A bar containing three fields (From, Date, and Subject) is next. These headings separate the message table into logical parts which will be discussed below. Note: Between the Date and Subject columns is a small column that is unlabeled in which one or more Message Icons will appear. Messages can be sorted by the From, Date, or Subject fields by selecting on the appropriate heading. You can set which columns you want to see (and in what order) in the Message Index for each folder at the Index Order settings page.

What remains is the actual message table. You will notice that unread messages are bold while read messages are in normal text. Four fields form this table. On the far left is a Checkbox. When selected, the message on the same line is subject to the actions previously discussed (moving, deletion, flagging, etc.). From tells you who sent you the message, or at least what e-mail address it came from. Date shows the day the e-mail was sent. Subject displays what the sender entered as the subject. Message Icons appear to help you easily note specific information about a particular e-mail message. These are summarized in the table below:

Attachment Present
Flagged Message
Unread Message
Unread Message Deleted
Read Message
Read Message Deleted
New Message Reply
New Message Reply Deleted
Read Message Reply

Low Priority

Finally, you can specify Message Highlighting, which will allow you to color code messages in your mailboxes based on criteria you specify.
